  5.                            (The emulated typewriter)

  9.   E-TYPE  will  transform  your  existing  computer  into  a  fully  fledged 
  10.   typewriter which will display and print text instantly. As you have disco- 
  11.   vered, there are many printing jobs which are far better suited to a type- 
  12.   writer.  For example,  form filling,  addressing envelopes,  writing short 
  13.   notes/memos,  typing labels etc.  E-TYPE takes just a few seconds to load, 
  14.   you can then start typing straightaway - far quicker than loading and then 
  15.   setting up your wordprocessor. E-TYPE can either be used as a simple manu- 
  16.   al typewriter, or a fully fledged electronic typewriter with justification 
  17.   wordwrap, etc. E-TYPE is especially useful for the novice or occasional u- 
  18.   sers of wordprocessors because of its simplicity  (no longer will you have 
  19.   to wade  through  menus to select options  or set up  complicated  control 
  20.   codes).  E-TYPE saves space - no need to keep the typewriter for those ir- 
  21.   ritating little jobs the wordprocessor cannot cope with.  This little file 
  22.   caters for  experienced computer users as  well as those who are embarking 
  23.   on computerisation  for the first time.  However,  from whatever point you 
  24.   wish to start,  we do suggest that you read this little file very careful- 
  25.   ly.  This doesn't take long and it will enable you to become familiar with 
  26.   most of  the features of the program.  If you are reasonably  experienced, 
  27.   and patience is not one of your virtues,  then it is possible to get going 
  28.   quickly by  reading the Reference Section  (follows on 1 of our NEW DOCS). 
  29.   This will quickly point you in the right direction,  and avoid unnecessary 
  30.   detail. So now let's start rightaway with the most important details...    
  31.   E-TYPE  is originally set for an EPSON printer.  PRINTER.SPC:  Is the file 
  32.   which contains all of the information about your printer needed by E-TYPE. 
  33.   Mostly it contains control codes unique to your printer (e.g. bold, italic 
  34.   etc.).  E-TYPE only looks for the printer file called  PRINTER.SPC. On the 
  35.   disc you will find several printerfiles (in addition to PRINTER.SPC) which 
  36.   are  suitable  for  different  types  of printer.  For example, EPSON.SPC, 
  37.   IBM.SPC, QUEN.SPC.  Currently, PRINTER.SPC is set up for  EPSON compatible 
  38.   printers.  If you wich to change this (and set it for say IBM) simply copy 
  39.   the appropriate file  (i.e. IBM.SPC)  to PRINTER.SPC.  Therefore, when you 
  40.   next run  E-TYPE,  the program  will use the  printer file  PRINTER.SPC as 
  41.   normal, but this time it will have been configured for an IBM printer.  If 
  42.   a printer  file suitable  for your type of  printer does  not exist on the 
  43.   disc, you have two alternatives:                                           
  44.       -1- Take a text editor or suitable wordprocessor in which you can load 
  45.           and edit the existing printer file - PRINTER.SPC.                  
  46.           1. Make a copy of PRINTER.SPC to another file,  suitably named for 
  47.              your printer,  in this  example a  Brother  printer,  therefore 
  48.              BROTHER.SPC.                                                    
  49.           2. Load BROTHER.SPC into your text editor                          
  50.           3. From the template loaded (which has been configured for another 
  51.              printer), edit the file suit your Brother printer.              
  52.           4. Save the edited file.                                           
  53.           5. Copy the file back to PRINTER.SPC. E-Type will now use your new 
  54.              configuration.

  56.    The printer file MUST have the following format:

  58.                           Each line of the file consists of:                 
  59.

  62.               The codes must correspond to the following order:

  74.               Device Name: This is the printer port.                         
  75.               The default is set for a paralel port.

  77.     The following protocol is used when specifying code sequences:           
  78.                                                                              
  79.        Character     =  Character (upper/lower case)                         
  80.        Control code  =  \three digit decimal number representing             
  81.                         the control code (e.g. escape=\027%)                 
  82.            When specifying the sequence for left/right margins, the          
  83.            parameter should be given as %.  For example, with Epson          
  84.            printers the left margin code sequence is \0271% (escape          
  85.            1 left margin value).

  89.   your printer. If not I hope you can manage making one.
